MONSTER BALL MARCH 28, 2011

Monday could not have been a more perfect night in Downtown Los Angeles for a complete freak show to take over Staples Center. The weather was amazing, allowing all the LITTLE MONSTERS to come out of hiding to celebrate the Birth of MOTHER MONSTER, who turned 25 and put on a mind blowing, non stop show!

Queen of the Disco

May 1977, Bianca Jagger Celebrates her 30th Birthday at newly opened New York Club STUDIO 54. She entered the party on a white horse, and established the now legendary club's hotspot status and its infamous, over the top scene of sex, drugs, and disco.  STUDIO 54 was the place to see and be seen in the hottest fashion of the Disco era.

Bianca Jagger, then wife of Rolling Stones front Man Mic Jagger was a perfectly sculpted model muse for the long, clean, glittering lines of 70's GLAM fashion...most of which was inspired by, and worn to be seen at studio 54. Bianca was a major style icon of the 70's and 80's with a friend list including Halston himself and Andy Warhol she influenced fashion and art more that anyone at the time, and she LOVED to party!

(With  designer Halston at Studio 54 1977)

With the return of 70's GLAM into modern fashion we can't help but to look to Bianca for fashion inspiration. Clothing was masterminded for this woman to go out in! She graced magazine covers, hosted parties, and now works as a civil rights activist, but her time spent on top at STUDIO 54 will be fresh in our minds as fashion currently takes its inspiration from Disco. The clothing was not just androgynous, it carried a sexual ambiguity that fit the complexity of much of the music. Just as the music was something not heard before, so were the clothes something very specific to this time. They were vivid, bold and astonishing, and inspired a lot of fervent copiers.

Halston must have been reliving the days of disco for this years show at Paris fashion week, sending looks down the runway that are fit for a queen of disco.

Halston was not the only one taking the 6 to STUDIO 54 this year at Fashion Week, multiple design houses took inspiration from the decadent decade, most on point? Gucci.

Pop Art Front and Center

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has been a pop art designer in our midst for well over 35 years. His imaginative work is inspired by the interplay between fashion, art, and design. And it is no wonder that his Andy Warhol-esque pieces have captured the eye of candy coated popstar, Mrs. Katy Perry.

JC de Castelbajac has designed many outfits worn by Katy, including the muppet dress which she wore at his Spring/Summer 2010 show in October 2009, the Obama dress and red carpet dress worn at the 2008 EMAs, the South Park pajama top and leggings from his JC/DC line worn in a TwitPic, and a smiley face top worn at a concert.

So it should have been no surprise that Katy arrived at the JC de Castlebajak Fall 2011 show dressed in one of his most interesting, yet wearable pieces from the line.

I am personally pleased to see the return of the blue wig...It never got its full fashion run.

The Fall 2011 line is amazing, and it is obvious why the designer is one of Perry's favorites. Almost every piece in the line would complement the Popstar, her curvy shape, and her loveable style. And although she didn't take to the runway as Gaga did at Mugler, she was the star of the show.

The Intersection of Pop Music and Fashion

Music and Fashion have inspired each other for more decades than I myself have been alive, but already in 2011 thus far the two worlds are existing so closely together that it seems they might merge into a beautiful, inspired nebula.

If that sentence does not immediately evoke images of "Our Lady of Pop" Lady Gaga and Mugler designer Nicola Formichetti than you have yet to experience the fashion orgasm that is their collaboration.

The Mugler show at last weeks Paris Fashion week featured a 5'3 Gaga walking the runway to her own "Born This Way" An unreleased track from Gaga's new Album, due out May 23, 2011, was intended for the show, but in final runs of the show Thierry Mugler was so inspired by "Born This Way" that he chose to use the title track for the runway show.

Although Gaga is famously associated with the late Alexander McQueen, she has also obviously been a Mugler Muse for quite some time. You can find Mugler designs in the Paparazzi video, and recently On the March cover of Billboard Magazine, in her 2011 Grammy Performance, and sporting the feminine Menswear suit in the Video for "Born This Way."

As an inspired fan I can say that I am looking forward to more collaborations from the two, as well as what direction her own design house Haus of Gaga will go as the release of her long awaited album draws near.

And may the ever changing Lady Gaga continue to inspire us all.
